Learn Stock Market Investing

The Philippine stock exchange (PSE) in partnership with online broker, Citiseconline has recently released a short 20 page guide entitled “Building wealth with stocks: A basic guide to investing in the Philippine stock market”

Well it is not really a comprehensive guide on how to build wealth through stocks a lot could be said about the subject. It took me years to arrive at what I know is the best method to build wealth through stocks, but this short ebook will serve its purpose of giving newbie investors an introductory guide to investing in the stock market.

Only a few Filipinos know that the stock market is one of the best wealth building machines ever invented by man. I’ve written comprehensively about this in the series entitled “Ten reasons why I love investing in the stock market.” Most Filipinos have a lot of misconception about the stock market that is why they do not invest in stocks. I’ve written extensively about this in my series entitled “Ten myths of stock market investing.” They do not realize that investing in the stock market gives great opportunity for monetary gain. There are even stocks which yield almost 10 % return per annum compounded in dividends alone. Add the Capital gains and you will have perhaps a total of 15 % to 20 % or more compounded per annum. This really beats saving in time deposits which merely yields an interest rate of about 5 % or less. However unlike time deposits the stock market does not produce guaranteed returns. But studies have shown that stocks are the best investments in the long run compared to other investments. Much can be said about this in other post, which I will be writing more on later. I can however guarantee one thing though, if done right, stocks will really help you build wealth. And to do it right, you have to buy stocks as if you are buying a business, which is of course extensively discussed in this blog.

Anyway, I really salute the efforts of the PSE in trying to educate the public about stock market investments as there is really a need for such. The Philippines is one of the first countries in Asia to open a stock exchange. In fact the Philippine stock exchange is the first and longest operating stock exchange in Southeast Asia. Sadly the Philippine stock exchange is among the smallest in Asia and with the least trading hours. Only an estimated less than 1 % of the entire Philippine population has invested in the Philippine stock market.

Aside from releasing this ebook, the PSE has also been doing a lot of free seminars and road shows for the past few years. They had been really doing a lot of land mark reforms over at the PSE. Thanks to PSE president Francis Lim who has recently retired. I hope that the new PSE president will be as innovative and forward thinking as Francis Lim. Doing seminars and releasing ebooks may be great, but I believe the best way to increase the number of Filipinos that will invest in the stock market is to include a finance and investing subject in the high school and college curriculum.

Today close to 50 % of Americans invest in the stock market. It took years before investing in the stock market gained wide acceptance among the American public. Peter Lynch in his new book “Learn to Earn” writes that in the 1950s, about 20 years from the Great Depression, only an estimated 4.2 % of the American population has invested in the American stock market. By the 1960s it rose to about 10 %. By the mid 1980s, 1 out of 5 Americans owned stocks. I hope it doesn’t take the Philippines that long to raise awareness about the potentials of the stock market!
